The range of BMW is already quite extensive when you look at it starting from the entry level 1-Series to their M variants. You will not run out of BMW vehicles if you think of a sallon, coupe, hatchback, SUV, or hybrid. The development goes on and just recently auto spies saw an X6 M running on diesel at Nordschleife.
The M division though are still looking for something in the line up of BMW. During a recent interview, one of the project leaders for the F10 M5 confirmed that BMW is looking into making a pure BMW supercar. It is that one thing missing from the line up of the German carmaker since the M1 that rolled out back around 1978 through 1981.
BMW unwrapped a concept vehicle in celebration of the 30th birthday of the M1 but nothing has been heard about the project since then.
Recently, the M division of BMW has been making some loud buzz saying that they want to have a supercar to challenge that of Audi’s and Mercedes’. The chief of product development was recently interviewed and he shared that the engineers of the M division wants to convince BMW to make a supercar just like how AMG people urged Mercedes to come up with the SLS.
It is not enough that you have an idea or wanting it so bad, the M division also needs to convince the management of BMW that the project will bring in some money for the company. The engineers share that the team has discussed about it several times but they have not dealt with the business aspect of it for now.
Profitability was also the issue when the company came up with the Z4 Roadster. For now, it is still just a plan and still a ton of things to consider before any chance to see a green light for a BMW supercar.
